Reflection AI debuts open-weight Beam model for coding and reasoning

Early third-party testing suggests Beam could be among the most token-efficient open models in its class, with the firm positioning it as competitive with Zhipu AI’s GLM-5.2.

An Nvidia-backed US start-up, Reflection AI, debuted Beam, its first open-weight model built for coding, reasoning, and agentic tasks, aiming to challenge China’s dominance in freely available AI systems, according to SCMP Economy.

Reflection AI said Beam is competitive with Zhipu AI, also known as Z.ai, on coding and agentic workflows, and that it is approaching Alibaba Group Holding’s Qwen3.8-Max on similar tasks.

The firm also said Moonshot AI’s Kimi K3 remained ahead in raw capability, even as it framed Beam as a strong open-model option based on early third-party testing.

Beam’s launch comes as Alibaba owns the South China Morning Post, SCMP Economy noted, highlighting the competitive positioning among Chinese and US AI model developers.
