Warren and Hawley press insurers over closed claims without payment
The senators sent letters on Oct. 2 to six insurers, including State Farm and Allstate, asking for data on denied homeowner and personal auto claims and whether claims handling changed over the past decade.
US senators Elizabeth Warren and Josh Hawley are pressing six insurers over concerns that an increasing share of homeowner and auto claims are being closed without payment to policyholders, according to Insurance Journal.
In letters dated Oct. 2, the senators asked State Farm, Allstate, USAA Capital Corp., Farmers Insurance Group, Liberty Mutual Insurance Co., and American Family Mutual Insurance Co. to provide figures on unsuccessful claims for homeowners and personal auto insurance, the factors affecting those claims, and any material changes to claims handling policies over the past decade.
Warren, the Massachusetts Democrat and ranking member of the Senate Banking Committee, and Hawley, the Missouri Republican, said the growing share of claims resulting in no payment raises questions about whether consumers can rely on insurers to respond when disasters or emergencies affect essentials like a home and a car.
