Chinese researchers build coin-sized wearable mini artificial pancreas

The prototype integrates a glucose sensor and insulin micropump in one device, and has only been tested on mice so far.

Chinese scientists have developed a wearable all-in-one device they describe as a step toward a more autonomous mini artificial pancreas for diabetes care, combining a glucose sensor with an insulin micropump.

According to a study published in the peer-reviewed journal Microsystems & Nanoengineering on September 29, the researchers from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China say their prototype is a coin-sized, smartphone-controlled device that performs monitoring and insulin delivery in a single unit.

The team said it could reduce the need for patients to wear separate patches that combine glucose monitoring with hormone delivery, which is common in existing commercial systems.

The device, however, has so far been tested only on mice, the outlet reported, with the researchers characterizing it as an early-stage prototype for future diabetes management.
