Japan to consider owning nuclear-powered submarines in revised security documents

The plan could allow initial research into building a domestically powered nuclear submarine before any decision on acquiring a full fleet.

Japan is expected to float the idea of acquiring nuclear-powered submarines in revised security documents to be released later this year, with analysts viewing the move as a way to start discussion and address public concerns, according to SCMP Economy.

Citing government sources, SCMP Economy says the Yomiuri newspaper reported that an expert panel tasked with considering changes to Japan’s National Security Strategy and other security documents would indicate Japan is “considering ownership” of nuclear submarines.

The approach would permit initial research into developing a domestically built nuclear-powered submarine without a firm decision to acquire a fleet, SCMP Economy reports.

SCMP Economy adds that if public support is adequate, the project could receive approval to proceed.
