Scottish Hallyards Castle faces demolition plans for 5 billion pound data centre

The proposed 62-acre Cato scheme near Auchtertool in Fife would support a 600-megawatt data centre development built in phases for up to seven buildings.

Bisnow reports that Hallyards Castle, a 1,000-year-old site near Auchtertool in Fife, has become a focal point in a planning row tied to a new data centre development.

The outlet says the proposal would demolish the remains of the castle to make way for ILI Group's 600-megawatt Cato data centre, part of a broader wave of hyperscale schemes across Scotland.

Bisnow adds that Historic Environment Scotland declined to grant the castle protected status after a request by local residents, arguing the data centre planning process was already underway and that it typically avoids adding new designations during active planning or regulatory steps.

The report says ILI submitted plans in June for a 62-acre development described as a roughly £5 billion investment, built in phases with plans for as many as seven buildings and an on-site substation, and the company said it recognizes the local importance of the site and intends to ensure its history and heritage.
