EU grants strategic status to KGHM copper projects worth $2.4B

Brussels said the designation under the EU Critical Raw Materials Act is intended to speed permitting and coordination for KGHM’s Retków-Grodziszcze mining and Legnica smelter-to-recycling plan.

Mining.com reports the European Commission granted strategic status to two copper projects totaling 9.5 billion zlotys, or $2.44 billion, proposed by Poland’s state-controlled producer KGHM Polska Miedz.

The designation covers the Retków-Grodziszcze mining project and the conversion of KGHM’s Legnica smelter into a recycling facility, which KGHM said could receive faster permitting, better administrative coordination, and preferential financing.

The move is tied to the EU Critical Raw Materials Act, which aims to expand domestic production and processing while reducing reliance on China and other non-EU suppliers.

Under the plans, KGHM targets extracting more than 100 million tonnes of ore from Retków-Grodziszcze by 2055, producing nearly 1.5 million tonnes of copper and more than 5,000 tonnes of silver, and creating a Legnica recycling operation producing about 135,000 tonnes of electrolytic copper and 250 tonnes of nickel annually.
