US grain storage outlook eases as 2026 corn crop forecast shrinks

The USDA projects 2026 fall grain supplies at 25.11 billion bushels, up 6% from the prior five-year average, even though capacity is still tighter than average.

A USDA Grain Transportation Report indicates that grain storage conditions in the United States should be somewhat less strained this year, helped by a forecast for a smaller 2026 corn crop after record production in 2025, according to World Grain, citing the report.

World Grain reports that while storage is still expected to run tighter than the prior five-year average, above-average beginning grain stocks and potentially record soybean production, along with continued above-average corn output, are expected to ease some pressure. Combined total fall grain supplies are projected at 25.11 billion bushels, the outlet said.

The same World Grain summary says this total would be 3% below last year but 6% above the prior five-year average. As of Dec. 1, 2025, the USDA data cited by World Grain put total US grain storage capacity at 25.49 billion bushels, including 11.87 billion bushels of off-farm commercial storage and 13.62 billion bushels of on-farm storage.
