China’s June car exports exceed 1 million for first time

China’s overall overseas shipments rose 27% in June, keeping the country on track to match or beat last year’s $1 trillion trade surplus amid tariff risks from the US and EU.

China’s monthly car exports topped 1 million for the first time in June, signaling accelerating overseas demand for brands ranging from BYD to Jaecoo, according to official Chinese customs data cited by The Guardian.

The same data showed overall exports rose 27% year over year in June, helping keep China on track to match or beat last year’s record trade surplus of $1 trillion, despite disruptions from the truncated tariff fight with the US.

The outlet also warned that the export momentum increases friction with Europe and the US. It cited analysis from the Mercator Institute for China Studies, which projected a large EU goods surplus for China in the first half of 2026, and noted that exports to the EU grew 12.7% year over year.

For European auto makers, the influx has heightened competitive pressure. The Guardian linked the surge to strain on the sector, including Volkswagen’s plan to cut up to 100,000 jobs as part of restructuring, and said China’s EU-bound exports of electric and hybrid vehicles faced less direct impact from earlier EU tariffs on Chinese EVs.
