GLP-1 users cut grocery and snack spending, shifting retailer demand

A Journal of Marketing Research study found grocery spending fell 5.3% on average within six months of starting GLP-1s, with higher income households down 8%.

Commercial Observer says GLP-1 use has grown quickly in the U.S., citing a Gallup survey that showed 3% of adults using weight-loss GLP-1 medications in 2024, rising to 11% by July 2026. The outlet also cites that 15% of adults said they have tried a GLP-1 drug such as Ozempic or Wegovy at some point.

The outlet links the rise in usage to changes in consumer spending patterns that affect retail foot traffic and sales. According to a Journal of Marketing Research study published in December 2025, households reduced grocery spending by an average of 5.3% within six months of starting a GLP-1, and higher-income households cut spending by 8%.

Commercial Observer also reports that limited-service eating out spending fell by 8%, including fast-food and coffee shop purchases, while spending on snacks and sweets dropped by 10%. The outlet adds that an April 2026 McKinsey & Company report broke down category-level changes six months after starting a GLP-1, with chips and savory snacks down 11.5%, sweet bakery items down 8.5%, and cookies down 7.0%.

The piece says only a few categories saw increases over that six-month period, including nutrition bars up 0.5%, meat snacks up 1.0%, fresh produce up 1.5%, and yogurt up 2.5%, based on the McKinsey findings. It notes that evidence of declines in sugary snack purchases is widespread, as summarized in the article.
