Hong Kong cross-border high-speed rail tops 16 million riders in six months

MTR said average daily trips exceeded 92,000, with a nearly 150,000-record day on April 4 during the Easter and Qing Ming holiday.

Hong Kong’s cross-border high-speed rail link carried more than 16 million passengers in the first six months of the year, the highest level since the service debuted in 2018, MTR Corporation said. The operator said average daily trips topped 92,000, reflecting strong ridership across the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link corridor.

MTR attributed the demand to rising numbers of Hongkongers traveling to Shenzhen and beyond for leisure. It said passenger flows were generally higher on weekends and public holidays, particularly during longer breaks.

The company also pointed to a peak travel day, noting that nearly 150,000 trips were recorded on April 4 during the Easter and Qing Ming Festival holiday.

In comments carried by SCMP Economy, Michael Tien Puk-sun, the former chairman of the Kowloon-Canton Railway Corporation, said the future of MTR would hinge on cross-border traffic and that the cross-boundary market could bring new customers rather than simply shifting demand from other transport options.
