Advanced tech patents in China near 1 in 6 as high-value stock rises

China’s National Intellectual Property Administration said high-value invention patents reached 2.36 million, including fields such as AI, cloud computing and big data.

Advanced technologies accounted for around one in every six valid invention patents in China, according to data cited by the China National Intellectual Property Administration.

By the end of last month, valid invention patents in areas such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing and big data made up 16.5 percent of China’s total valid patents, the administration said, and it linked the trend to building new growth drivers.

The spokesman, Rui Wenbiao, also said China’s stock of “high-value invention patents,” which included patents in advanced technology and new energy, award-winning patents, and patent families with overseas extensions, stood at 2.36 million, or 16.8 per 10,000 people.

The administration pointed to hi-tech manufacturing and digital industries, including AI, as key drivers of economic growth amid a prolonged property downturn and weak domestic demand, the report said.
