Hong Kong squatter settlement residents face August 25 eviction for public housing
One resident says redevelopment curtailed her medicinal herb income and left her family with just under HK$80,000 for relocation.
Residents in Cha Kwo Ling, one of Hong Kong’s last squatter settlements, are preparing to leave ahead of a government deadline tied to redevelopment for public housing, according to SCMP Economy.
A resident identified as Mrs Lam said she had until August 25 to clear her belongings, including medicinal herbs she dries at home for income.
Lam estimated she has forgone more than HK$400,000 in potential earnings after redevelopment work removed the space she used to sun-dry plants and prevent moulding, and she said letters seeking compensation to the Chief Executive’s Office had not produced a substantial response.
She added that her family of three received just under HK$80,000 from the government for forced relocation, while she described the community’s daily routines and plans to meet former neighbours as changing after residents move out.
