US panel says China is projecting outward confidence amid economic anxiety
The US-China Economic and Security Review Commission cited firsthand travel in July, including visits to major cities, and said discussions around AI underscored the upbeat messaging.
A US congressional advisory body said China is projecting an outward image of confidence despite ongoing anxiety about the economy and potential growth, following a week-long visit to Beijing, Shanghai and Hangzhou in July.
South China Morning Post reports the panel, the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission, said members observed the gap between public confidence and underlying concerns during a Wednesday press briefing, with chairman Randy Shriver describing the messaging as “outward confidence.”
Shriver said the commission’s last official visit was in 2019 and argued that firsthand observation can differ from secondhand accounts, referencing what he described as large-scale infrastructure and apartment development during the trip.
Commissioner Chris Slevin added that confidence was especially visible in conversations about artificial intelligence, according to the briefing described by SCMP Economy.
