Zhu Rongji, China reform premier, dies at 97
His obituary from Xinhua credits him with shifting toward proactive fiscal and monetary policies to sustain stable, rapid economic growth.
Zhu Rongji, China’s premier from 1998 to 2003 and a central figure in the country’s market-oriented reforms, has died at age 97, according to an obituary released by state news agency Xinhua.
SCMP Economy reports that Zhu was remembered for tackling corruption, reforming China’s centrally planned approach, and overhauling the state-owned enterprise sector, including moves aimed at strengthening clearer property rights and separating government functions from business operations.
The obituary also credited Zhu with helping China navigate the immense impact of the Asian financial crisis, and with working to protect the prosperity and stability of Hong Kong as an international financial center.
It added that Zhu shifted to proactive fiscal and monetary policies to maintain stable and rapid economic growth, while advancing broader economic system reform.
