Ferguson Marine to cut nearly a quarter of jobs as ferry work ends

The Port Glasgow yard employs 283 people, and it expects to shed 70 roles through voluntary redundancy while waiting for promised new ship orders.

BBC Business reports that Scotland’s state-owned Ferguson Marine shipyard in Port Glasgow is inviting employees to apply for voluntary redundancy as construction winds down on the second of two long-delayed CalMac ferries.

The yard currently employs 283 staff, including 34 apprentices, and expects to cut 70 posts. Work is drawing to a close on the second CalMac vessel, MV Glen Rosa, which is due for completion by the end of this year.

The Scottish government has said it will directly award the yard new orders for four smaller ships, but ministers say they are still conducting due diligence on the plan. The government’s approach follows Ferguson Marine’s 2019 nationalisation after a dispute with the government-owned ferries agency CMAL over extra costs for two dual-fuel CalMac ferries.

The shipyard has also done subcontracting work for BAE Systems on new Type 26 frigates and currently has no confirmed future orders. BBC Scotland says the promised orders have helped Ferguson Marine update its business plan, potentially unlocking 14.2 million pounds of modernisation funding, while ground investigation work aims to install new equipment and software to raise productivity.
