Sensex slips as Nifty ends below 24,219, metal stocks rise
Indian equities traded lower amid weak global cues, with the US stepping up Iran-related sanctions as Brent futures fell nearly 2% but held above $92 a barrel.
India’s benchmark Sensex closed lower on Monday, 24 August, falling to 77,369, down 172 points, or 0.22%, while the Nifty 50 ended 33 points, or 0.14%, lower at 24,219.05, according to Reuters cited by LiveMint Markets.
The Nifty Midcap 150 rose 0.07% but the Smallcap 250 declined 0.21%. Sector-wise, Nifty Metal jumped 1.6% even as banking and financials fell, with Nifty Bank down 0.41% and Financial Services down 0.39%, while PSU Bank was the biggest sectoral loser at -0.93%.
LiveMint Markets attributed the cautious tone to weak global signals, lingering US-Iran conflict risk, and concerns about higher bond yields, noting that oil prices eased on profit taking.
Brent crude futures dropped nearly 2% but remained above $92 per barrel, and US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said new sanctions against Iran would be the toughest in history, with the US aiming to sever remaining economic lifelines to Tehran; LiveMint Markets also cited Geojit Investments Head of Research Vinod Nair for commentary on investors waiting for fresh sanctions later on Monday.
