China to set new standards to accelerate brain-computer interface market
Draft MIIT guidelines target more than 40 standards by 2028 and aim for a domestic framework plus greater influence over international rules by 2030.
China is drafting new standards for brain-computer interface technology as Beijing seeks to speed up commercialisation and boost the country’s role in setting rules for the emerging neural sector, according to SCMP Economy.
The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) plans to formulate or revise more than 40 standards by 2028, encourage at least 100 companies to adopt them, and lead or participate in the development of more than 10 international standards.
By 2030, China aims to develop more than 80 standards, creating a domestic framework for the industry while increasing its influence over global standards for brain-computer interfaces, the outlet said.
Brain-computer interfaces enable direct communication between the mind and external devices, with potential applications ranging from restoring movement and speech for people with disabilities to controlling computers, industrial machinery, and consumer electronics, SCMP Economy reported.
