Malaysia gold business reinvents itself as Kuala Lumpur modernizes
The store has expanded from a goldsmith counter into jewellery and bullion trading, and it is preparing for a generational handover.
A longstanding Kuala Lumpur goldsmith business is adapting to the city’s transformation, with a framed receipt inside Abdul Razak Gold House showing an old address no longer in official use: 63 Ampang Street, Kuala Lumpur, listed with the name Malaya.
According to SCMP Economy, the shop opened under older shophouses near Lebuh Ampang, now lined with taller developments including skyscrapers and overhead train tracks, while many of the nearby businesses remembered from the proprietor’s childhood have disappeared over time.
SCMP Economy reports that the current custodian, Mohd Razalie Abdul Rasul, said the business has moved forward in how it thinks and operates, including expanding into bullion trading and buying the property next door.
He is also preparing for a future handover, describing his plans for the next generation while noting his father remains involved as a mentor but the approach must be more modern.
