Crude spikes after US strikes target IRGC assets in southern Iran

WTI jumped from below $87.50 to just under $89.00 in a fast run of intraday bars before giving back to trade just above $88.00, while Brent moved toward $93.50.

Crude oil prices moved sharply higher after American forces began striking Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps targets in southern Iran, fueling fresh concerns around shipping and export routes. According to FXStreet, West Texas Intermediate was pinned beneath $87.50 through the afternoon before rallying more than $1.25 in three consecutive five minute intervals to print just short of $89.00.

FXStreet said the initial repricing arrived all at once after the statement confirming the strikes, then oil later gave back more than half a dollar to trade just above $88.00. Brent followed the move, running to near $93.50 before those gains stabilized.

The outlet linked the step up to the geography of the reported targets, which included locations inside the Strait of Hormuz and sites beyond it along the southern coast, including Bandar Abbas, Minab, Qeshm and Sirik, plus Jask, Konarak and Chabahar. FXStreet noted that striking the bypass routes can affect export capacity by targeting facilities that route barrels around the strait, rather than only affecting transit delays.

FXStreet also cited reporting that US officials said the president had been weighing a plan for limited strikes aimed at stopping Iran from rebuilding radar and missile capability used to threaten shipping. The escalation matters, the outlet said, because actions with stated objectives and no announced end date can reprice expectations quickly, while Iran has warned that if it is barred from exporting through the Persian Gulf, other producers may also be unable to export.
