Kroenke’s Angels buyout could revive redevelopment talks near Angel Stadium

Anaheim is looking to restart a stalled city plan after Kroenke moves to buy the Angels, with MLB approval a key next step.

Stan Kroenke’s move to buy a controlling stake in the Los Angeles Angels is already reigniting redevelopment conversations in Anaheim, where city leaders see the potential to revisit development plans around Angel Stadium.

Angel Stadium is owned by the city of Anaheim, and the prior team owner, Arte Moreno, had been in talks to purchase the stadium and about 150 acres nearby. Those efforts collapsed in 2022 amid a scandal and a federal investigation, and a corruption case tied to the failed deal led the then-mayor to go to jail.

Anaheim Mayor Ashleigh Aitken said she is hopeful that the new ownership could reopen communication, contingent on the deal closing and being approved by Major League Baseball. The city is also watching Kroenke’s pattern of developing stadium districts, citing his role in Southern California projects such as the Hollywood Park mixed-use development around SoFi Stadium and plans for Rams Village in Warner Center.

Local context includes another nearby redevelopment, with the Anaheim Ducks owners privately financing a $5B project called OCVibe near their hockey arena. That plan is described as bringing residential, hotel, retail, office space, and a concert venue within a short distance of Angel Stadium.
