China scientists report crop yield gains from mineralized irrigation water
Field trials across provinces from Heilongjiang to Hainan recorded yield increases of up to 45.7% for sugar cane and 40.6% for rice.
Chinese scientists say large-scale field trials across China found that irrigation water treated with natural minerals exposed to sunlight can sharply improve crop yields, according to a report by SCMP Economy.
The trials covered crops including rice, wheat, soybeans, peanuts, sweet potatoes, sugar cane and vegetables, and the researchers said the approach improved crops’ photosynthetic efficiency.
SCMP Economy reports that the scientists recorded yield increases of up to 40.6% for rice, 24.7% for wheat and 45.7% for sugar cane, with a sweet potato trial showing a 109.5% rise.
The lead scientist, Lu Anhuai of Peking University, said the method could offer alternative ways to boost agricultural production by improving how efficiently plants use sunlight, the outlet added.
