India VIX rises more than 36% since September amid geopolitical risks
The volatility index has also climbed to roughly 28.9 after oil prices surged on the US-Iran conflict, before later easing toward around 9 between April and August.
India VIX, a gauge of market volatility, has risen more than 36% since the start of September and is up nearly 61% year to date, LiveMint Markets said, attributing the move to higher volatility and uncertainty linked to geopolitical factors.
The outlet noted that the India VIX is generally seen in a 9 to 12 lower band and a 12 to 15 normal range, and that its sustained rise since September suggests investors should expect sharper intraday swings, even though it is still near the normal range.
LiveMint Markets said the index touched a record low of 8.72 on January 1, 2026, then moved higher into March, reaching 28.91 after oil prices rose sharply amid the US-Iran conflict.
It added that the US and Israel launched coordinated air strikes on Iran on February 28, after which the index declined on a monthly basis from April to August, returning to levels near 9, before concerns resurfaced as fighting between the US and Iran continued alongside worries about the macroeconomic outlook.
