Wall Street slips as oil and rates climb

The S&P 500, Dow, and Nasdaq all finish lower while energy jumps, Treasury yields rise, and crude pushes higher.

The big picture. U.S. stocks close lower across the board, with the S&P 500 down 0.6%, the Dow down 1.2%, the Nasdaq down 0.3%, and the Russell 2000 down 0.5%. The tape stays choppy, and the S&P 500 spends the day sliding from 7705.24 to 7673.52.

Energy leads the sector board with a 1.1% gain, while Utilities rise 0.9%. Health Care is the weakest group, down 2.5%, followed by Financials down 1.4% and Materials down 1.0%. CNBC reports U.S. military action against Iranian oil tankers and related Middle East escalation, while Reuters says oil surges amid inflation and Middle East worries.

Treasury yields move higher, with the 5-year at 4.573%, the 10-year at 4.806%, and the 30-year at 5.264%. The dollar index slips 0.3% and gold falls 0.8%. VIX rises 2.8% to 15.72, even as the VIX 9-day drops 12.1% to 14.81.

Crypto is softer, with Bitcoin down 0.9% to 78443.0781 and Ethereum down 0.3% to 2483.54. The total crypto market cap falls 1.93% to 2694918456560, while Bitcoin dominance stands at 58.3%.
