Stocks end mixed as Treasury yields keep climbing
The S&P 500 slips, the Nasdaq ekes out a gain, and bond yields jump again as traders digest a busy macro and earnings tape.
The big picture. U.S. stocks finish mixed. The S&P 500 falls 0.3% to 7651.54, the Dow drops 0.9% to 50906.0508, and the Russell 2000 loses 0.4% to 2796.8645. The Nasdaq Comp. edges up 0.2% to 26861.0645, while tech is the only sector in the green, up 0.6%.
Treasury yields climb again. The 5-year rises to 5.089%, the 10-year to 5.293%, and the 30-year to 5.638%, matching headlines about a broad bond-market rout and reminding traders that higher rates are still the market's main pressure point.
Volatility ticks higher. The VIX rises 1.9% to 16.34, while the VIX 3-month and VIX 6-month also move up, leaving the curve higher across the board.
Crypto mostly holds up, even as the broader asset class cools. Bitcoin rises 0.1% to 83675.3125 and Ethereum gains 0.1% to 2679.6899, while the total crypto market cap falls 2.6% to $2.9T.
