Stocks fade as Treasury yields and oil climb
The major indexes end lower, while rates, volatility and some energy prices move higher.
The big picture. U.S. stocks finish lower across the board. The S&P 500 falls 0.8% to 7683.7, the Nasdaq drops 0.9% to 26820.4, the Dow loses 0.7% to 51481.5, and the Russell 2000 slips 0.7% to 2817.9.
Sector action is mixed, with Industrials up 0.9% and Tech up 0.8% leading the gainers. Communication Services falls 0.9% and Energy drops 0.9% at the bottom, while Staples, Health, Financials, Utilities, Materials, and Discretionary all post modest gains.
Treasury yields move higher, with the 10-Yr Treasury at 5.24% and the 30-Yr at 5.561%. The VIX jumps 8.1% to 16.07, while the VIX 9-day rises 12.8% to 14.39, pointing to a bump in near-term anxiety.
Crypto is weaker too. Bitcoin falls 1.5% to 83195.4, Ethereum slips 0.3% to 2679.8, and the total crypto market cap drops 3.1% to $2.9T, while Bitcoin dominance holds at 58.2%.
