Stocks rise as Treasury yields push higher and crude falls
The major U.S. indexes finish higher, but rate pressure keeps the bond market in focus and oil extends its slide.
The big picture. U.S. stocks close higher across the board. The S&P 500 rises 0.7% to 7773.9502, the Nasdaq adds 1.1% to 27477.3105, the Dow edges up 0.2% to 51267.8984, and the Russell 2000 gains 0.5% to 2847.1357.
The day’s strongest sector moves are in Materials, up 1.3%, and Communication Services, up 1.2%. Energy also gains 1.0%, while Real Estate is the only sector in the red, down 0.3%.
Volatility stays contained but ticks up. The VIX rises 1.4% to 15.52, while the VIX 9-day jumps 6.6% to 12.85. The S&P 500 finishes near the high end of its intraday range, after spending most of the session grinding higher.
Treasury yields move up again. The 10-year rises to 5.311% and the 30-year climbs to 5.665%, while the 5-year settles at 5.066%. In credit, LQD is flat on the day and HYG adds 0.1%.
Overseas, the tone is mixed. The Nikkei falls 0.9%, the Hang Seng drops 2.6%, and India’s Sensex loses 0.8%. Europe finishes firmer, with the DAX up 1.2%, the CAC 40 up 0.8%, and the Stoxx 600 up 0.8%. Brazil stands out, with the Bovespa surging 7.7%.
Crypto is softer. Bitcoin slips 0.6% to 85960.2969, Ethereum falls 0.3% to 2718.7, and the total crypto market cap declines 1.7% to $2.9T.
