Oil jumps while stocks drift lower on a choppy day
Energy led the tape as major U.S. indexes finished slightly lower, Treasury yields rose, and crypto traded softer.
The big picture. U.S. stocks finish mixed to lower, with the S&P 500 down 0.1%, the Nasdaq off 0.3%, the Dow down 0.1%, and the Russell 2000 lagging at minus 0.6%. The S&P 500 stays above its 200-day average, and its intraday range is tight, with the index mostly chopping around the mid-7,700s before ending near the close.
Energy is the standout sector, rising 4.7%. Health care adds 1.7%, while financials and materials also finish in the green. On the flip side, real estate falls 1.3%, utilities drop 1.1%, and tech slips 0.9%. CNBC Markets points to oil rising back above $82 as doubt grows over a Washington-Tehran deal on the Strait of Hormuz.
Treasury yields move higher across the curve, with the 5-year at 4.405%, the 10-year at 4.699%, and the 30-year at 5.243%. Credit is softer, with LQD down 0.6%, while HYG slips 0.2%. The VIX rises 3.8% to 15.46, even as the VIX 9-day drops 24.2% to 12.77, a split that suggests near-term stress eased even as longer-dated volatility stayed firmer.
Crypto trades lower, with Bitcoin down 1.4% and Ethereum down 1.9%. The total crypto market cap falls 1.37% to $2.3T, while Bitcoin dominance holds at 56.5%. On the global equity side, Europe is mostly firmer, led by the DAX up 0.7% and the Stoxx 600 up 0.3%, while Asia is more mixed, with Shanghai up 1.0% and the Kospi down 0.6%.
