Today's Recap · Thursday, September 10, 2026

Stocks fade, oil jumps, and yields keep climbing

The S&P 500 and Nasdaq both close lower while crude, Treasury yields, and volatility all move higher.

The big picture. U.S. stocks finish in the red across the board. The S&P 500 falls 0.5% to 7,636.4, the Nasdaq Composite drops 0.6% to 26,253.3, the Dow loses 0.8% to 52,380.7, and small caps lag again as the Russell 2000 slides 1.3%.

The move comes with a sharper risk-off tone in rates and volatility. The 10-year Treasury yield rises to 4.837%, the 5-year climbs to 4.614%, and the VIX jumps 4.7% to 16.46 while the VIX 9-day drops 7.5% and the VIX 3-month and 6-month gauges both fall.

Energy is the only S&P sector in the green, up 0.8%. Tech is flat, while industrials and discretionary lead the losers, down 1.5% and 1.3% respectively. On the movers list, oil-related names and AI software stand out on the upside, while several consumer and software stocks take heavy hits.

Overseas, the tone is mixed. Japan’s Nikkei falls 1.7%, Hang Seng loses 0.4%, and Australia’s ASX 200 drops 1.0%, while Shanghai ekes out a 0.2% gain. In Europe, the FTSE 100 dips 0.1%, the Stoxx 600 is nearly flat, the DAX is unchanged, and the CAC 40 edges up 0.1%.

Crypto also weakens. Bitcoin slips 0.4% to 78,096.0, Ethereum falls 1.0% to 2,459.6, and the total crypto market cap drops 3.6% to $2.68T. Bitcoin still holds above its 200-day average, but the broader coin list is mostly lower.
