Wall Street slips as oil spikes and Treasury yields rise
The major U.S. indexes finish lower, energy leads the board, and long-dated government yields move up.
The big picture. U.S. stocks end lower across the board. The S&P 500 falls 0.6% to 7686.1, the Nasdaq Composite drops 0.6% to 26370.9, and the Dow Jones loses 0.7% to 53185.9. Small caps underperform, with the Russell 2000 down 1.9% to 2956.5.
Sector action is mixed but tilted red. Energy is the standout, rising 2.7%, while Discretionary gains 0.6% and Comm Svcs is basically flat at 0.0%. The weakest areas are Utilities, down 2.2%, Industrials, down 2.0%, and Real Estate, down 1.2%.
Treasury yields move higher. The 5-year climbs to 4.507, the 10-year rises to 4.758, and the 30-year moves to 5.249. Credit is softer, with LQD down 0.5% and HYG down 0.1%.
Crypto is firmer even as the broader market cools. Bitcoin gains 1.4% to 78762.0, Ethereum rises 2.3% to 2473.3, and the total crypto market cap slips 0.4% to $2.7T.
