China humanoid robot makers face commercial test at Beijing conference

The World Robot Conference runs Wednesday through Sunday and will showcase more than 2,000 exhibits, including Unitree’s Shanghai IPO momentum.

China’s humanoid robot makers are shifting from viral demos to proving robots can work reliably and generate economic value, Reuters reports from Beijing ahead of the World Robot Conference.

Beijing authorities expect more than 300 companies at the conference from Wednesday through Sunday, with over 2,000 exhibits and more than 150 new products, as investor attention turns toward productivity, required human supervision, and whether robots can earn a return on their costs.

The conference also coincides with the Shanghai stock market debut of Unitree, a leading humanoid robot maker by sales volume, after an initial public offering that was more than 8,000 times oversubscribed by retail investors.

Reuters reports that while some robots are starting to replace workers in niche roles such as hotel food deliveries and select assembly-line tasks, broad adoption beyond limited pilots has not yet taken hold, and some industry participants say the crowded sector must prove technology in real applications.
