KB Home CEO targets top-3 local scale while keeping Built to Order

The Los Angeles-based builder said its Built to Order approach is tied to even-flow production and asset-level decisions on pace versus margin.

KB Home CEO Rob McGibney is prioritizing deeper local market scale paired with the company’s Built to Order operating model as he settles into the top role, with the strategy aimed at linking backlog visibility to production, trade leverage, cost control, and asset-level decisions.

In an interview with HousingWire, McGibney outlined a goal to be a top-3 builder in each market, while keeping Built to Order central to operations. He said the model supports customers choosing homesites, floor plans, and design options rather than selecting from preset features and finishes.

HousingWire notes that KB Home ranks No. 7 among U.S. homebuilders by annual unit closings and No. 8 by home sales revenue in the HousingWire Homebuilder Rankings, placing it among the national leaders as consolidation and competition intensify.

McGibney, a 26-year veteran who stepped into the business leadership role in March, said a non-negotiable for his tenure is putting the customer at the center from day one, describing that focus as the foundation for broader operational choices.
